YAMLA PAGLA DEEWANA

Story:‘Yamla Pagla Deewana’ initially set in Canada is the story of Paramveer Singh (Sunny Deol), a well-settled employee in Canada who lives with his mother (Nafisa Ali), firang wife and two kids. As the story proceeds it shifts to Banaras and Punjab. Paramveer misses his father Dharmveer (Dharmendra) who had abandoned him and his mother taking away his younger brother Gajinder (Bobby Deol). Searching for them Paramveer at last finds a clue that the duo is big time cons in Banaras. Paramveer leaves for Banaras. In order to get them home he becomes a part of Dharam-Gajinder gang and reveals the truth of his relationship to them. However, Dharam refuses to recognize him and how Paramveer reunites his family is an interesting watch.

Review: Deols are back with the bang. If ‘Apne’ moved you to tears, ‘Yamla Pagla Deewana’ will tickle your funny bone. It is one of the rarest films which lives up to the hype it has created before the release. The amazing comic-timing of Dharamendra and Bobby Deol supported by Sunny is a sheer delight to watch. If Sunny is brilliant with his emotional moments and fight sequences; Dharmendra and Bobby are at their ease in the abstract father-son relationship. The beautiful locales from Banaras ghat to paddy fields in Punjab give the movie a colourful look. The new girl Kulraj Randhawa in a romantic role takes the movie on another level building up the plot marvellously.

Story Treatment:‘Yamla Pagla Deewana’ rests on very simple and ordinary story. However, what makes it an interesting watch is its’ execution. The director Samir takes lot of time to set the plot in the first half but he picks up the pace in the second with some brilliant comic moments leaving you laugh your lungs out. On one hand, Sunny amazes with his hilarious fight sequences where his loud voice is enough to bring enemies on their knees; on the other hand, with a sparkle in his eyes, Bobby manages to grab your eyeballs with naughty expression in his voice. Every scene unfolds twist in the second half which makes it an interesting watch.

Star Cast: The chemistry between Dharmendra and Bobby is a pleasure to watch. Dharmendra is unmatchable with his con-act. Bobby springs up a surprise with superb dialogue delivery. Sunny is versatile by showcasing different shades of acting. Anupam Kher plays his part brilliantly. Same goes for new girl Kulraj Randhawa. Nafisa Ali has small but pivotal role which plays well.

Direction: The creative opening of the movie showcasing bits and parts of old Hindi cinema says it all about what Samir has in store for us ahead to watch. ‘Yamla Pagla Deewana’ is a treat to watch for its’ some hilarious moments which induces life in the ordinary storyline. One can ignore the lengthiness of the film owing to the fact that Samir has tapped three power-packed performers in the single frame and brighten up the screen. Yamla Pagla also reminds of recent blockbuster ‘Dabangg’ which too rested on a thin storyline but boasted off incredible entertainment.

Music/ cinematography/ Dialogues: Music is brilliant with the title song ‘Yamla Pagla Deewana’ which is USP. Other songs too ring a bell with the soothing music be it romantic or raunchy numbers. Cinematography is awesome capturing beautiful Punjab and Banaras. The film also boasts off some impressive special effects. Dialogues are mind-boggling with some typical Punjabi slang like an icing on the cake.

3 Ups and 3 Downs: The three power-packed performances are the biggest USP of the film. Brilliant music and hilarious dialogues are no less. Amazing fight sequences featured on Sunny are a must watch. The length of the film is the biggest drawback which makes it boring at few moments. The unnecessarily dragged first half and lastly, editing could have been more crisp.
