Story- The film explores the journey of Susanna’s life, how she romances seven husbands for the quest of love .It also explores the pshyche of Sussana and the reasons as to why she kills all her husbands.
Story Treatment- The film is a dark comedy with a thoughtful and thrilling storyline.. The story grips you till the end as the question that keeps coming back to the audience is who is Sussana’s 7th husband and also when will she eventually stop her killing spree. The climax of the movie is quite unexpected as Sussana kills herself in the end. The story takes you through love, lust, betrayal, violence, blood and pandemonium.
Review- Kudos to Vishal Bharadwaj for making 7 khoon maaf, a short story adaptation of Ruskin Bond’s ‘Sussana’s 7 husband’. The characterization and the play of emotions have been very well brought out. The beauty of the movie lies in the interconnections and complexities in relations shown between Sussane and her husbands. The movie very well portrays the pshyche of Sussana. Vishal has revamped the genre of black comedy and it’s no more for niche audience who loves a gritty, violent, dark thriller with romance as background.
Director- Vishal Bharadwaj knows his work well. This critically acclaimed director has proven his skills once again with this movie. Earlier too has tried his hands on filming of book adaptations which simply had rocked at box office and this time with ‘Susanna’s 7 husbands’ he has declared that out an out this movie ahs a Vishal touch. He has written the story for the movie format, composed the music and directed it too. Vishal’s casting is perfect for individual roles opposite Priyanka, who has delivered a breath taking performance as Susanna.
Dialogues/Cinematography/Music- Director Vishal has used silence very effectively. The background music and banging of Church Bells helps in takeing the narration forward. Dialogues like ‘I want to drink his blood’, ‘Public mein Sanasani karne do’ are very effective and hard hitting. The camera work is experimental with usage of blur and moving images. The movie with gritty camera works gives you a feel of dark comedy. Extreme close-up angles helps in reflecting Sussana transformation from 20-65. The music which is composed by Vishal Bharadwaj is fresh. It will make music buffs groove to it’s beats specially to the Indian version of Russian folk song ‘Darlinggg’. The placidity of the song ‘Bekaran’ in the valleys of Kashmir too deserves a special mention.
Ups and down: It’s a must watch movie for it’s strong and efficient cast, a special appearance by writer Ruskin Bond on silver screen, groovy songs , Priyanka’s unique and challenging performance and Greg Cannom’s natural prosthetic make-up.
The movie will do wonders for Vishal and Priyanka at the box office and will entertain you to the utmost.
FALTU
Ace Bollywood choreographer Remo D’Souza makes his debut as a director with the film ‘Faltu’, a romantic comedy produced by Vashu Bhagnani.
The film is based on the concept of youngistan, modern youth and their cool approach towards life. In the film, you could expect to see some amazing dance moves for an obvious reason of Remo being its director.
The word ‘faltu’ means complete waste in Hindi. The very name suggests that the movie is different from the usual comedy films. Apparently, the film cracks joke on our Indian education system. The movie is particularly releasing on the all fool’s day, 1st April 2011, to celebrate the funny quotient of the movie.
The story of the film revolves around a group of best friends, who are good at nothing and are permanently marked as failure by the education system. Arshard Warsi is the one with frog eyes, who has solutions to offer to everyone in their group, Chandan Ray Sanyal is the silliest of them all in the group, Jackky Bhagnani plays the funny bone, who loves to make fun of everyone, Riteish Deshmukh is the one with too much creativity to offer, Pooja Gupta is a freaky, non- marriage material girl, who is obsessed with listening to music whereas Angad Bedi is a dumbo, with a soft and sweet heart. The boys and the girl stay together and enjoy the life together. However, things change when they undergo a life changing experience.
The satire on the educational system tries to highlight the message that students should not be forced to study by their parents. Instead they should be given the freedom to choose what they wish to do.
Movie carries a message for the modern age parents and kids in a funny and lighthearted way. A must watch this weekend.
A word on ‘Faltu’ tracks, the music has already received a great response from the audience as its popular track ‘Char Baj Gaaye’ has been topping charts ever since it came on air. Sachin Jigar and Sameer are the music directors for the film’s music. In all, ‘Faltu’ is a fun film to watch this weekend.
Rating: Three Cheers to this one!
YAMLA PAGLA DEEWANA
Story:‘Yamla Pagla Deewana’ initially set in Canada is the story of Paramveer Singh (Sunny Deol), a well-settled employee in Canada who lives with his mother (Nafisa Ali), firang wife and two kids. As the story proceeds it shifts to Banaras and Punjab. Paramveer misses his father Dharmveer (Dharmendra) who had abandoned him and his mother taking away his younger brother Gajinder (Bobby Deol). Searching for them Paramveer at last finds a clue that the duo is big time cons in Banaras. Paramveer leaves for Banaras. In order to get them home he becomes a part of Dharam-Gajinder gang and reveals the truth of his relationship to them. However, Dharam refuses to recognize him and how Paramveer reunites his family is an interesting watch.
Story Treatment:‘Yamla Pagla Deewana’ rests on very simple and ordinary story. However, what makes it an interesting watch is its’ execution. The director Samir takes lot of time to set the plot in the first half but he picks up the pace in the second with some brilliant comic moments leaving you laugh your lungs out. On one hand, Sunny amazes with his hilarious fight sequences where his loud voice is enough to bring enemies on their knees; on the other hand, with a sparkle in his eyes, Bobby manages to grab your eyeballs with naughty expression in his voice. Every scene unfolds twist in the second half which makes it an interesting watch.
Star Cast: The chemistry between Dharmendra and Bobby is a pleasure to watch. Dharmendra is unmatchable with his con-act. Bobby springs up a surprise with superb dialogue delivery. Sunny is versatile by showcasing different shades of acting. Anupam Kher plays his part brilliantly. Same goes for new girl Kulraj Randhawa. Nafisa Ali has small but pivotal role which plays well.
Rating: 3.5/5
DHOBI GHAT
Story: ‘Dhobi Ghat’ set in Mumbai is a story of four people of different backgrounds, whose lives cross for a definite purpose. Arun (Aamir Khan) a renowned painter and divorce meets Shai (Monica Dogra), a banker and a part-time photographer in his gallery and end up making love with her. Though, they part ways but destiny in the form of Munna (Prateik Babbar), a common dhobi of the duo and an aspiring actor keeps them in touch. Munna sees a potential contact in Shai to accomplish his dreams; while Shai feels that Munna to be the common contact point to be in touch with Arun. Arun otherwise a loner accidentally comes across three video tapes at his new apartment which belongs to Yasmin (Kriti Malhotra), watching which Arun gets acquainted to her unheard story addressed to her brother. Arun on the other hand puts Yasmin’s story on canvas.
Review: Expectations are bound to surface when a movie churns out of Aamir Khan’s kitty and also when Kiran his wife is wearing the director’s hat. ‘Dhobi Ghat’ is surely for niche intelligent audience. The debutant Kiran Rao is brilliant with her direction but screenplay lacks to make an impact. The writer explains the essence of the beautiful locations of Mumbai be it Mohammad Ali Road or sea waves with some breathtaking dialogues. The movie though lack the typical Bollywood masala and is non-lustrous but yet it has it’s own beauty, though at times it tests one’s patience because of slow-paced narration. One can’t take eyes-off from watching the flawless performances of each actor involves in the film.
Story Treatment: A slightly complex but well-written story. If you are hungry for some serious meaningful cinema; ‘Dhobi Ghat’ is the one for you. But if you are looking for a typical Aamir Khan film, DG surely will disappoint you. Dhobi Ghat basically showcases the lives of four passionate people who happen to be worthwhile to each other both emotionally and professionally, which comes out as a refreshing concept. Kiran transforms beautifully the lives of these self-centered characters to sensitive human beings. One can’t forget the way Aamir cries in the climax discovering the death of Yasmin. While Pratiek too switch lanes from a beautiful innocent guy to an angry man who is ready to beat his brother’s murderers. Yasmin leaves you helpless while she confides her emotions to her brother through camera
Star cast: Power-packed performances of one and all are the USP of the film. Aamir Khan indisputably lives up to the words of Kiran who had claimed- nobody could match up to Aamir. As a painter Aamir has shown his best side. Rao's actors are fresh, even Khan shocks the audiences mildly by using words like f*** and a******. Pratiek Babbar is at his natural best and seems comfortable with the slum lingo. He is for sure a complete scene-stealer. Monica Dogra is brilliant too. Kiran Malhotra goes beyond her comfort zone and has performed stupendously.
Direction: Kiran chooses to make a film that's very real and also that comes across as personal memoirs that have found a place on celluloid. It's more of a video diary on the inhabitants of this bustling metropolis. Kiran beautifully has captured expressions of the actors through their respective passions. Kiran manages to show every shade of Mumbai right from, opulent and classy apartments to the slums, Dhobi Ghat is her authentic piece of work.
Music /cinematography etc: Background scores are melodious and go well with the theme of the story. Tushar Kanti Ray’s Cinematography is ‘A’ class. Dialogues as mentioned earlier are the soul of the film which take it to another level. Narration plays an important role as they highlight the importance of each location in the film to the twists induced each time. Editing could have been tightened a bit.
3 Ups and 3 Downs: Excellent direction by Kiran Rao, ear-soothing background score and mind-blowing performances by all the actors.
DG lacks to impress from the commercial point of view. Slow-paced narration and slightly loosely written screenplay are other drawbacks of the film.

DIL TO BACCHA HAI JI
Story: The story revolves around three men Naren (Ajay Devgn), Abhay ( Emraan Hashmi), Milind ( Omi Vaidya) and their encounters with love. The rest of the story traces their highs and lows of love life and the extent to which men can go to achieve or avoid their love.
Review: Kudos to Madhur Bhandarkar who for the first time has explored the genre of romantic comedy. The movie takes a humorous look at love with real characters and relatable situations. It’s a perfect entertainer, but the content is not fresh and unique. The movie is a romantic comedy but similar storylines have already hit the screens earlier. The difference is that it has explored the psyche of men in a humorous way. You will be disappointed if you expect a glimpse of ‘Page 3’ and ‘Fashion’. Though it’s a slice of life with realistic parameters, but Madhur has produced better movies before.
Story Treatment: It’s a simple romantic comedy with real life characters like Naren who has a mid life crisis and thus falls in love with bubbly June Pinto( Shazahn Padamse), Milind who is idealistic in love and thus can’t think of losing ‘ virginity’ before marriage. Finally, Abhay is a complete flirt and is thus alien to love. The story quite lucidly traces their encounters and conflicts with love. The story completely justifies the title ‘ Dil To Baccha Hai ji’ as men never get tired to woo women and fall in love. It also gives you a reflection of the way men struggle to cope with modern women and contemporary relationships.
Star Cast: Ajay Devgn as Naren Ahuja has delivered a brilliant performance with mid life crisis and a confused middle aged man in love with a young intern. Emraan did what he does best as he plays the role of a Casanova Abhay perfectly and passionately. Omi as Milind will give you a reflection of his past onscreen role ‘ chatur’ as his ascent and the way he delivers his dialogue is same. Shraddha as gungun Sarkar manages to overshadow the other two with an ambitious and practical role. Shazahn is sweet and fresh. Shruti has less onscreen presence but manages to portray a girl who speaks her mind. Tisca Chopra as a socialite is a surprise package who delivers a convincing performance.
Director: Madhur has tried to move away from serious cinema and give audience a laughter dose for the first time. His earlier films have explored the dark world of fashion, jail and journalism. Though he tried to keep his signature style intact with realistic characters and real-life situations, but his mettle as a director is best proved through serious cinemas. He is known for making hard-hitting and realistic cinemas where has earned critical acclaim and box office success. ‘DTBHJ’ may give him box office success as it is an entertainer, but he may not earn critical acclaim.
Dialogues/ Cinematography/ Music- Dialogues are conversational and humorous. Some dialogues are full of punches like Emraan’s ideology to love ‘ Soo aur Sone Do’, The concept of losing ‘V’ ( Virginty) and hot yoga is funny and refreshing. Cinematography is nothing noteworthy, while the editing follows a linear story telling. Pritam’s music is soulful and fresh. Sonu Nigam has returned after a long time with his trade mark style with Tere Bin in ‘DTBHJ’. Mohit’s ‘ Abhi Kuch Dino’ is perfect and brings a foot tapping appeal to the song.
Ups and Downs: You can go for this movie as for the first time Madhur Bhandarkar explores the genre of romantic comedy. A fun filled entertainer packed with humor with good soulful romantic songs makes it an interesting watch.
This roller coaster ride of emotions is repetitive and the romantic take on love is old. The screenplay and storyline lacks punches. Nothing new, so you can easily give it a miss.
Ratings: 2.5/5
PATIALA HOUSE
Story: Set in England, ‘Patiala House’ is a story of Parghat Singh Kahlon aka Gattu (Akshay Kumar), who has sacrificed his dreams to pursue a career in cricket because of his dictator father Gurtej Kahlon a.k.a Bhauji (Rishi Kapoor). The reason behind Bauji’s conservative attitude is the racial discrimination by British which led to the assassination of his dear uncle Mr. Sahini (Prem Chopra) long years ago. Gattu has to bear the brunt because his Bhauji as a matter of prestige doesn’t allow him to join the England team and he instead becomes a shopkeeper. In fact, Bhauji is the decision-taker of entire Kahlon family who blame Gattu responsible for their miserable condition as he couldn’t stand by his decisions as the eldest son. Simram (Anushka Sharma) a relative of Kahlon family somehow realizes Gattu’s dreams and persuades him to give a second to his career as a bowler when the sole Indian in the British cricket counseling team Mr. Bedi (Tinu Anand) proposes Gattu’s name as a new bowler in England team. Now, how will Gattu fulfill his dreams as a bowler despite advert is surely an interesting watch?
Review: After string of flops, Akshay Kumar can surely bank on ‘Patiala House’ as the film is a complete entertainer though it rests on a very predictable storyline. Had little more dimensions been added to the storyline; the film would have been a power-packed phenomenon. Nevertheless, the strong points which surely land ‘Patiala House’ in a comfortable zone is extremely good direction and well-written dialogues and screenplay. The correct dozes of twists despite an expected plot makes the film a worth a shot.
The film has little to offer in terms of locales as most of it has been shot either in Patiala house or the cricket ground. The superb chemistry between Akshay and Anuhska along with a power-packed performance by Rishi Kapoor is another highlight of the film. The most beautiful fact about ‘Patiala House’ is each and every character has induced life in otherwise bland storyline and all equally important to take the story further.
The film has little to offer in terms of locales as most of it has been shot either in Patiala house or the cricket ground. The superb chemistry between Akshay and Anuhska along with a power-packed performance by Rishi Kapoor is another highlight of the film. The most beautiful fact about ‘Patiala House’ is each and every character has induced life in otherwise bland storyline and all equally important to take the story further.
tory Treatment: Nikhil Advani knows his audience very well, thus, hasn’t left any stone unturned to strike the emotional chord. ‘Patiala House’ has its heart and soul at place despite little weaknesses. Backed by a powerful screenplay, Nikhil convinces one with some honest performances on-screen which makes one sympathize with Akshay and at the same time feel irritated with Rishi. The characterization of each and every actor is one of the highpoints of the film. Certain moments during the beginning when the Kahlon family becomes the victim of racial discrimination is so convincing with the treatment. Everything is apt be it a comic-timing, emotional drama or few romantic scenes between Akshay-Anushka.
Star Cast: Akshay Kumar has yet again proved that he can pull off any genre. He is brilliant with his expressions and dialogue delivery. One can’t take eyes-off him when he is in tears for breaking his Bhauji’s heart. Rishi Kapoor can still give run for money with super-energetic stunning performance. Dimple Kapadia is natural and graceful. Anuhska Sharma yet again proves that she is here to stay with her flawless act. The rest of the supporting cast is equally brilliant.
Direction: ‘Patiala House’ reminds of director Nikhil’s debut venture ‘Kal Ho Na Ho’ as far as characterization is concerned. He has beautifully captured the emotions of each and every character be it the little scary mother Dimple Kapadia who watches a ball about to hit his son in the field or the angry siblings of Akshay Kumar who eventually start looking upto him as a hero. The natural transition in the thoughts of one and all from Rishi to Akshay and others are convincingly portrayed on-screen.
Music/ cinematography/ Dialogues: Music is brilliant with pleasant surprises in terms of innovative choreography in songs like ‘Long Da Lashkara’ or ‘Rola Paegya’. Cinematography is excellent complemented with a crisp creative editing. Dialogues as earlier mentioned are the strong points of the film. They are refreshing new to the ears.
3 Ups and 3 Downs: Power-packed performances are one of strong points in the film followed by excellent direction which has taken care of small but pivotal things making the film worth a one-time watch. Dialogues and innovative choreography is another highpoint. A predictable storyline, a slightly dragged first half and less of outdoor are the drawbacks of the film.
TANU WEDS MANU
Movie Name: Tanu Weds Manu
Star Cast: R. Madhavan, Kangna Ranaut, Jimmy Shergill, Eijaz Khan
Director: Anand Rai
Producer: Shailesh Singh, Vinod Bachchan
Music Directer: Krashana Sarkar
Genre: Romantic comedy
Story: Manu ( R. Madhavan), a guy from Delhi who is a doctor in London comes to meet Tanu ( Kangna) in Kanpur to get hitched in an arranged marriage. While Manu falls in love with Tanu at first sight, the girl is dead against arranged marriage. The film explores how the two handle each other and whether their chemistry clicks off at the end or not.
Story Treatment: The film is a romantic comedy and is not just a wedding. It has mixed emotions, humor, romance and complex relationships. The characterization is perfect as Tanu is strong and rebellious and Manu is silent and rational. The plot may give you a feel of ‘Jab We Met’, though the performances and storyline is quite underrated.
Review: Tanu Weds Manu starts as a crisp witty comedy, but strangely looses its grip by the end. The climax is stretching, unrealistic and boring. Though an unlikely pair, but chemistry is surely missing between the two. The ‘tedha raasta’ to marriage is neither appealing nor interesting.
Star Cast: Tanuja Trivedi aka Tanu plays the role of a carefree wild small town girl who has her own values and is against arranged marriages. Kangna looks beautiful, but fails to perform as a girl who lives by her own rules. Her accent and carefree performance gets bit too overboard. She is best with her psychopath character. Madhavan as the dutiful and loyal lover plays his part well. Though from time to time his simplicity and homeliness is bit too annoying, specially when he has lived 12 long years alone in London. Jimmy shergill does his cameo performance convincingly. Kangna could have said ‘yes’to him and not dumped him for no reasons as there is still a spark between them.

Director: Director Anand Rai tried to make a seedhi saadhi love story with bit of twists and turns. The casting is unique, but the concept of marriage and love between diverse personalities is nothing new in bollywood. What you may like is the different flavour of small cities like Lucknow, Kanpur, Punjab that he has weaved in the story.
Dialogues/ cinematography/ Music-Dialogues are humorous and you can have a hearty laugh. A strange mix of UP and dialect gives the movie and the characters a real touch. Nothing noteworthy about camera work.Though the extreme close-ups made Kangna’s lips look bit too artificial. The music is fresh and will surely force music buffs tap their feet. You can’t stop grooving to ‘Kadi Sadi Gali’ as you move around narrow alleys of Punjab.

Ups and downs: Two most unlikely stars come together for the first time, watch out for their chemistry. If there is a shaadi coming up and you want some songs for sangeet, go for the peppy shaadi songs in Tanu weds Manu. Nothing new, but if you have nothing else to do this weekend, go for it, otherwise you can give it a miss.
